Recently, I attended the AFN Convention in Anchorage. I sold some of my art work up there. Here I am with US Senator Lisa Murkowski (R, Alaska). She has on one of my hats (a fedora).
Waahlgahl-Jaad (Judy Helgesen) is a self taught artist. In about 1996, Judy picked up a piece of alder, a carving knife, and began carving. When Judy begins to create her dolls, she visualizes the past and thinks about her elders.
The regalia on her dolls are also all handmade as well as the cedar hats that adorn them. Judy learned to weave from her family and friends. Judy does all of this by her own design. No two dolls are alike. She puts her heart into creating her hats and dolls and baskets, etc.
Wow! Keep up the good work - you are gifted with talent!! - love, CD, Nando & Laxmi
