Recently, I attended the AFN Convention in Anchorage. I sold some of my art work up there. Here I am with US Senator Lisa Murkowski (R, Alaska). She has on one of my hats (a fedora).
Richard Peterson commissioned this hat. Mr. Peterson lives in Kasaan, Alaska and is the President of the Organized Village of Kasaan and Vice President of Tlingit & Haida Central Council.
The canoe has a raven design on one end (shown) and an eagle design on the other. Each of the porcelain dolls has its own handmade regalia. In the canoe, there is a basket full of blueberries. One of the dolls has a paddle in his left hand and a halibut hook in his right hand.

Be honest. Did you guess correctly before you saw the answer? Albert Kookesh, Alaska State Senator and Chairman of SEALASKA's Board of Directors, stopped by and tried on my new top hat.
Waahlgahl-Jaad (Judy Helgesen) is a self taught artist. In about 1996, Judy picked up a piece of alder, a carving knife, and began carving. When Judy begins to create her dolls, she visualizes the past and thinks about her elders.
The regalia on her dolls are also all handmade as well as the cedar hats that adorn them. Judy learned to weave from her family and friends. Judy does all of this by her own design. No two dolls are alike. She puts her heart into creating her hats and dolls and baskets, etc.
